While a few days back, WhatsApp made headlines for undergoing a complete makeover with material design, new icons and better layout, the popular instant messaging service is back in the news after touching a whopping active user base of 800 million. Announcing this milestone, Jan Koum, CEO, WhatsApp posted on his Facebook page, "WhatsApp - now serving 800,000,000 monthly active users. Reminder for the press out there: active and registered users are not the same thing." Apparently, registered users refer to people who have accessed or used WhatsApp atleast once in a month.


These numbers make WhatsApp one of the largest social services in the world in terms of active users. While micro-blogging site Twitter has 288 million active users, photo-sharing service Instagram counted 300 million users and Facebook's Messenger app has 600 million monthly active users, the vibrant journey of WhatsApp messenger app has reached a milestone by crossing 800 million active users landmark. Interestingly, 100 million new users have been added in last 3 months alone. 

If we look at the numbers, WhatsApp is adding over 1 million users every day and if it continues to grow in this pace, the application will hit one billion users by the end of this year. Hence, it won’t be wrong if we say that WhatsApp is on its way to become the largest communication service in the world!
